Let's Divest CalPERS

Among public pensions, CalPERS is the nation's #1 funder of the fossil fuel industry.

The California Public Employees Retirement System provides over $27 billion to fossil fuel corporations that are building coal plants, oil pipelines and fracked gas wells—that’s more than any other public pension in the country.

For the last ten years, CalPERS members have been building a powerful campaign to hold CalPERS accountable for its complicity in the climate crisis.

OUR WORK

We’ve mobilized hundreds of state workers to urge the CalPERS Board to divest. We're using research, outreach, art, actions, and reports to make sure CalPERS members know about their pension's complicity in the climate crisis.

We're also empowering unions and cities with the tools they need to demand divestment.

GETTING RESULTS

In 2018, we successfully passed two laws requiring CalPERS to divest from thermal coal and disclose climate-related financial risks in their portfolio.

In 2021, major local SEIU 1000 DLC 743 passed a resolution supporting CalPERS' divestment from fossil fuels.

We've submitted petitions to CalPERS Board members signed by thousands of state workers, and have sent over 85,000 letters to CalPERS Board members. Fourteen cities in California have passed resolutions calling for CalPERS to divest, including Berkeley, Brisbane, Encinitas, Fairfax, Fremont, Mountain View, Oakland, Redway, Richmond, Palo Alto, San Luis Obispo, Santa Monica, Sunnyvale, and Watsonville.

Now, we're keeping the pressure on until CalPERS stops funding the climate crisis once and for all.
