UNION TEAM

ABOUT

FFCA’s union team works to build support for fossil fuel divestment within the labor movement and to educate, train, and support rank-and-file workers who want to take action for pro-labor, pro-climate policy. Our team is made up primarily of teachers, State of California employees, and other union members with CalPERS and CalSTRS pensions.

As a union team, we:

  • Encourage our unions to speak out for fossil fuel divestment. We’ve successfully advocated for divestment resolutions from the California Faculty Association, California Federation of Teachers, AFSCME California, California Nurses Association, 25 locals of the California Teachers’ Association, and more–and we’re just getting started!
  • Educate our co-workers. We teach our fellow workers and union members about the risks of fossil fuel investments, and organize them to take action for divestment.
  • Engage with our pensions. As rank-and-file workers, we depend on our pensions, but we’re rarely involved in making decisions about how they are invested. As a union team, we communicate with our representatives on the pension boards to encourage investments that are good for our pensions, our environment, and our future.
  • Develop our leadership. We build our organizing skills and take on more leadership in our unions and workplaces, and we encourage our coworkers to do the same!

Current Projects

Working with the 25+ CTA Locals that have already passed divestment resolutions to do outreach and education to other union members who are in the process of bringing divestment resolutions to their own Locals.
