Break Free from Fossil Fuels 2017
It’s that time of year again! Break Free 2017 (Break Free from Fossil Fuels) is organizing climate activists worldwide to take action around one central goal: to keep coal, petroleum, and natural gas in the ground.
This year the movement is inspiring actions around the globe from March 12th-March 31st. Activists are encouraged to harness creative energy to protest (peacefully of course) against the fossil fuel industry and the inherent risk posed by incessant profiteering at the expense of human health and the environment.
People are participating in Break Free 2017 in a wide variety of ways. In Hadera, Israel, people gathered on March 12 in a family setting to enhance climate awareness with art, face painting, games and virtual reality. Others are taking a more formal approach, as in Brisbane, Australia, where activists have scheduled experts to speak at a series of roadshow conferences intended to motivate Australians to fight special interests related specifically to coal. Education is a big part of the Break Free theme as well: activists will gather on the 25th in Dallas, TX for one day of training about non-violent direct action. And in Taiwan, the local Greenpeace chapter is leading a march on the 25th with expectant mothers and other attendees dressed up as Rosie the Riveter, implying that “we can do it” to help protect the next generation from the long term effects of runaway greenhouse gas emissions.
In the wake of recent policy changes away from climate science and in favor of the fossil fuel industry, Break Free 2017 actions may eclipse the founding movement of May 2016, when hundreds of thousands of activists, concerned citizens and celebrities made history by taking swift, immediate and disruptive action across 6 continents. This year’s efforts are building on the successes of the previous year.
